Fruits & Vegetables

Does anybody else have a hard time getting in the recommended 5+servings of fruits and vegetables daily? I've always struggled with it a bit and could use some tips to get more into my diet.
A typical day for me includes veggies piled high on a sandwich (1 serving) with a piece of fresh fruit. (2 servings) Steamed veggies at dinner (3 servings) and maybe a salad. (4 servings).
All this on a good day and still not even 5 servings!
I'd love to hear how you get in your fruits and veggies or great ideas that we can try.

According to federal dietary guidelines the following constitutes a serving:
1 cup of raw leafy vegetables
1/2 cup of other vegetables cooked or raw
1 medium apple, banana, orange, pear
1/2 cup of chopped, cooked, or canned fruit

  1. Gosh I could easily have at least 4 or 5 veges at night time with my protein. I don't seem to have any issues eating that much and would easily get in 7 in a day. I am a big eater though and veges is what I use to fill up with...hugs Khris

  2. I try to take a salad every day for lunch and that gives me 3-4 of my servings which makes getting in a few more at dinner not so hard. I also make my own fruit and veggie juice a few times a week for breakfast. But I just started these patterns in the last year or so - it does take some doing.

  3. Smoothies are your answer! I LOVE fruit smoothies and you can get several serving in one: add orange juice to your blender, then either frozen or fresh straw berries (1 cup), raspberries, some (not too many or it gets chunky) Blueberries and a banana for sweetness. So this would be - depending on your blender size - about 3- 4 servings! Enjoy!
