One thing that will help us have a healthy heart is to make sure we use healthy fats. It sounds like an oxymoron huh? Healthy fats??
When i was learning to cook my mom and MIL both used Crisco. Getting rid of that and vegetable oil was one of the first changes I made in my kitchen.
I now use mostly extra virgin olive oil for sauteing, browning meat, etc and canola oil for baking. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of oil, I use at least 1/2 unsweetened applesauce.
I'm sold on I can't Believe it's Not Butter Spray, although I know some people don't like the taste.
There are so many healthy fat alternatives, find a few that will fit your lifestyle forever.
What do you use for baking, cooking and putting on your toast?
Please tell me you don't use crisco or vegetable oil....
We have used olive oil for years but recently I also bought some walnut oil and some grapeseed oil to try to shake things up. We rarely use butter but sometimes we use a butter substitute that is made with olive oil.
ReplyDeleteI use extra virgin olive oil.
ReplyDeletei do everything you do.
ReplyDeleteI do, however, make the occasional homemade buttercream frosting, still it's better than the chemicals.
Okay, Lori. Here I am - a start to ask for help.
ReplyDeleteI don't have much to offer others but I hope to learn from others.
I'll put this blog on my sidebar to go to for help, for support, for encouragement, for ideas, but above all - FOR ME !!.... to learn and to MOVE.
I also use olive oil and the butter spray. I don't buy bread anymore and rarely bake, but if I had toast it would be I Can't Believe It's Not Butter as a topper.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit I indulge in bacon about once or twice a month, and then fry potatoes in the grease. But that's lightyears from where I was only a few years ago, and the way I grew up.
