The Courage to Start

I've been a tiny bit obsessed with running lately. I got this book at the library and I highly recommend it. The author, John Bingham, calls himself the Penguin because he is slow. He started running at age 43 when he was being measured for a tuxedo and his out seam measurement was the same as his waist! He loved to run as a boy, but somewhere along the line he found out he wasn't a good runner so he stopped.

Here is a quote from the introduction, "To be a runner, you simply have to run. It's not enough to dream about being a runner. It's not enough to plan on being a runner. Sooner or later, you have to run.
And if you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run."
The book is  about discovering the pleasures of running. (It isn't a how-to book!) I'm about 1/3 through the book and am really enjoying it.

  1. I too suffer from dreaming to run. I look at pictures of woman running in the middle of nowhere all geared and poised. I think it's a mix of envy and inspiration! LOL!!

But sadly my old knees won't have any of it, so walking is my refuge and when I have built my stamina I want to explore the Forest Reserve near me.

  3. I just finished that book!! It answered so many questions I did not even know I was asking. It has really helped me get back on track and improve on my training workouts. Loved it!!!
